6th XI : 17 Oct 2009 v Abingdon III
Abingdon 3rds 0 Wycombe 6th 7 (seven)
For the third week in a row, Wycombe had a storming second half, which blew the opposition away.
16 goals have been scored this season in the second half by this experienced team. This time though it looked like it would be different, with Paul Desbrulais giving the team a lead with a great short corner flick into the defenders corner after just 3 minutes. However this was a false start as the visitor to Abingdon made hard work of breaking down the baulk of the hosts.
Indeed, this was the poorest performance of the team this season as everybody misplaced passes, which made the runs into space tiring and without results. The good element though was the defending from the front, with the strikers and midfield hunting down the ball when it was lost, which meant that the defence was rarely troubled.
Indeed the game was played mainly in the Abingdon half and many shots and short corners flew at the Goalie, only for him to show his skills in blocking and saving. So half time arrived with Wycombe just one goal up and needing to push on to get the result they needed to stay top of the league.
Much discussion at half time brought back the thoughts about how good we could play if we picked up the pace and keep our passes to our own players. Also the need to pressure the keeper by picking up the rebounds.
Within a minute of the second half starting sticker James Stevens slotted the second goal when he picked up a rebound from the keeper and smashed it home. Abingdon kept on battling in the hope of stemming the flow, but with Tony Cull making a comeback this season after his terrible motorbike crash in 2007, flashed a shot goal wards more as a cross than a shot, only for a despairing defender to deflect this into his own net.
Now rampant, Wycombe pressed for more and this soon arrived with the ubiquitous Paul Desbrulais pinching the ball from an Abingdon midfielder, striding forward past defenders and striking his shot into the corner of the net his sixth goal of the season already. An average of two a game from central midfield, not bad eh!
Damian Power the other central midfielder was not to be outdone and got himself on the board with yet another rebound as Wycombe continued to pass their way around the opposition ‘D’ to great effect.
There was still time in the game for more and striker Dave Peterson got in on the act with a goal that typifies his industry and eye for goal. Again being in the right place at the right time to collect from a rebounding shot off the keeper, and collect his second of the season and this game’s seventh goal.
This result not only keeps Wycombe 6th top of their league but also makes them the most effective team in the club a 100% record, scoring 20 goals and only conceding one.
A sterner challenge is sure to be in store when Slough are the visitors to the Cressex stadium next week. Hopeful some of the 8 players how where not available for selection this week will be back to boost the side.
