High Wycombe Hockey Club was founded in 1900 and played its matches at various locations in the town until it made High Wycombe Cricket Ground its home in 1948, and where it still uses the clubhouse facilities today.
The club is proud of its long association with the Carrington family; Lord Carrington became the President of the club in 1931 and the present Lord Carrington is the club’s current Patron.
By 1954 the club was fielding four teams per week and in 1966 our own club player, Les Macready became an International.
The club continued to grow and a Veterans side was formed in 1984.
A key ambition of the club was almost achieved in 1994 when it was defeated in the end of season ‘play offs’ for promotion to the National League.
The club has won the Buckinghamshire County Cup twice and runner up five times in the past 14 years.
In 1996, the club was fielding six sides each week.
Two players who had played for the club in their early years gained International honours; John Wyatt played for Great Britain in the Atlanta Olympics and Scott Ashdown was awarded an England cap. John went on to captain Great Britain in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Today the club is represented by six men’s teams, one Veterans team (losing finalists in the 2004 county cup) and two junior sides.
The 1st XI uses the National Sports Centre at Bisham Abbey for its home matches, and local Astroturf pitches are used for other club home games.
The ‘Vets’ go on tour each year to the Harrogate Festival. The Under 14 and Under 16 teams regularly win their inter-club competitions and, in 1999-2000, won the Mercian South of England League.
A major recent success of the club has been its ‘Development’ team, a mixture of experienced adult players and talented teenagers that plays in a strong league each week.
Eleven young men who have progressed through this team played for the Bucks County side which won the England Under 21 championships in May, 2004.
This very successful team has also won the South of England championships for the past three years and supplied four players to the divisional team who also are the reigning national champions.
In order to build on this club strength and lift the club to the next level of success, we are now focussed on providing our own dedicated playing and clubhouse facility in High Wycombe.
We are engaged in discussions with the local and county authorities to achieve this important goal.
